Two InstaDeep Tunis-based AI researchers will present at NeurIPS 2023 NAML: North African Machine Learning workshop on multi-script handwriting recognition and what happens Multi agent Reinforcement Learning is built on economic theories.

The pair’s different research interests illustrate the breadth of AI research happening in North Africa.

Oussama Mahfoudhi looks at the logic of language itself and how it affects decision-making as he explores how Reinforcement Learning techniques can navigate and solve complex combinatorial optimization problems.

Meanwhile, Marwa Dhiaf sees language though the lens of different challenge: deciphering handwriting by combining computer vision, pattern recognition handwriting recognition, document image analysis and the latest deep learning techniques to extract text from handwritten images. “I’m excited to showcase my research at NeurIPS,”  Marwa says.

Oussama adds: “It’s great to connect with the vibrant North African AI community at this level of conference.”

To give the NeurIPS and the wider AI community an opportunity to get to know Oussama and Marwa better, we asked each of them three questions:

What inspired you to work in AI?

Simulating the human brain and intelligence has been my biggest inspiration in AI. This fascination wasn’t just a starting point; it continues to fuel my passion and work in this field every day.

What advice do you have for someone entering the field?

Mirror the evolutionary path of AI itself. Start by immersing yourself in the foundational papers and techniques, and then progressively build on that knowledge step-by-step.

What inspired you to work in AI?

AI offers the opportunity to tackle complex and challenging problems, from medical diagnosis to natural language understanding, which is highly rewarding.

What advice do you have for someone entering the field?

  • Build a strong foundation in mathematics and computer science
  • Learn the basics of machine learning and deep learning
  • Read research papers and stay updated
  • Collaborate and network

What’s your favorite AI meme?

“AI will not replace you, but the person using AI will.”
